Looking For Alaska

I read the book Looking For Alaska by John Green. Throughout the book John Green has a very youthful and some what dark style, that I enjoyed. He does this by showing the everyday life of an average group of high school students and what they have to go through everyday. For example Pudge says, "How could the girl who told that joke three hours before become a sobbing mess?" This demonstrates how the characters were young and faced with many troubling conflicts. By doing this John Green is able to captivate the readers attention and help them understand what others have to go through. He also uses a unique diction to help the reader understand the setting and the plot of the story. Also words that show who the characters are as people. Some of the words he uses to show this are disconcerting, y'all, and integral. These demonstrate how they are smart people who go to a nice school and that they are also southern. He uses syntax to also show these points, for example The Colonel's mom says, "But y'alls a-gonna have a turkey the size o' the kitchen." This also shows the setting and how where they are influences how they speak and act.  Another example is when Pudge makes the comment, ' . . . with flagrant disregard for the overwhelming flammability of the structure." This also shows how they have a wide vocabulary that they use. One of my favorite parts of the book is when Pudge was thinking,  “I was gawky and she was gorgeous and I was hopelessly boring and she was endlessly fascinating. So I walked back to my room and collapsed on the bottom bunk, thinking that if people were rain, I was drizzle and she was hurricane.”   This is because it very descriptively allows you to picture how he felt for her. I also like when Alaska is talking to Pudge and asks him, “how will we ever get out, straight and fast, of this labyrinth of suffering?” This is because I think it was very interesting how she thought. I would recommend this book because it was very interesting and John Green was able to connect well with all readers.
